Hub Directors Visit China

Enterprise Hub Directors John Dodd, Marilyn Huckerby and Mark Brunet visited innovation centres in China and Korea in November as part of SEEDA’s Global Region’s initiative to gain a better understanding of the opportunities available in these important markets.

Hub Director Marilyn Huckerby said, “Even though this was a very brief visit to each country I now have a more direct understanding of the opportunities that exist for our UK companies to do business in these two places, as well as the challenges, and the paramount importance of taking the time that is necessary to find the right contacts and develop good relationships.”

SEEDA’s Global Regions Initiative promotes two-way trade, investment, technology transfer and close academic links seeking to further enhance profitability and sustainable international businesses throughout the region.

China was the UK’s 15th largest export market in 2004, with UK exports increasing by 28% during this period. UK exports to China in 2004 totalled £2,378 million, while The UK imported £10,628 million of goods from China during 2004 – an increase of 24% on 2003 figures.

In recent years Korea has become a world leader in such sectors as semi-conductors and electronic products. The drive to increase technology-based industries and service industries continue at pace, largely driven by the recovery from the Asian economic crisis of 1997/1998.
