MARINE: Sector Focus
The UK has the largest marine sector in Europe. With a turnover of £37 billion PER ANNUM and employing more than a quarter of a million people, the sector is highly successful in key export markets. With a turnover of £10.8 billion in 2004, the marine sector in the South East represents more than 20% of the UK marine industry, and the South East is the most important marine region in the UK.
The sector includes activities in leisure marine, commercial and offshore equipment, ports and shipping, marine services and contracting, ship building and repair, trade associations, research, education and training.
The sector is dominated by small firms, with 95% of marine companies in the region being small and medium-sized enterprises and 50% with five or less employees. There are a small number of large firms that dominate in employment terms, these are concentrated in sub-sectors like shipbuilding, oil, defence and leisure marine.
The South East marine industry grew its turnover by 27% between 1995 and 2004, compared with 19% growth for the national industry.
