Student scoops £10,000 with MAD idea!

A student entrepreneur mentored by Solent Hub Director Arthur Monks has received £10,000 for taking First Prize in a competition to invent something to ‘make a difference’...

Twenty-one year old Craig Hellen from the University of Portsmouth won the Make a Difference (MAD) Ideas Competition with his design for an asthma inhaler allowing easier self-monitoring of the condition by the user. Craig, who is studying product Design and Innovation, said, “I believe it could have a serious impact on the lives of asthmatic sufferers and the way that the disease is managed and treated.”

The competition challenged students to come up with an idea that made a difference under the themes of health or environment. Over 155 entries were received from 25 institutions across the country and Craig, beat eight other finalists for first place at the final heat held in Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard.

Craig’s mentor, Arthur Monks, said, “The University of Portsmouth is way in front on Enterprise teaching and Craig’s idea combined with sound business planning and market research has shown this. I fully expect we will exploit this commercially and create a substantial business from it.”
