GeoSolveIT secures two year Department for Transport contract

Surrey-based GeoSolveIT, a geographic information systems consultancy and a member of the Surrey Enterprise Hub network, has been awarded a two year contract by the Department for Transport (DfT) to update the National Origin-Destination Survey Databank database and associated website which is used by transport planners throughout the country.  The website – www.dft.gov.uk/odsdatabank/ – provides a complete and comprehensive picture of where information on the origin-destination surveys (ODS) has been collected in Great Britain.

The ODS Databank website shows the location of roadside, public transport and home interview surveys which have been undertaken by a range of participants, including local authorities and consultants, often working on behalf of the DfT or the Highways Agency. The website is scheduled to be updated every other year and has recently undergone an update for sites added during 2007. This will take account of the most recent surveys.

As a result, this newly-launched website incorporates major new surveys and brings the database up to date in terms of available origin-destination datasets. The next update will be in 2009 and will play an even more important role in providing planners with access to information necessary to support decisions relating to transport infrastructure.

“This dataset will become more important as a reference source of information as it becomes increasingly more expensive to acquire new data,” explains GeoSolveIT Managing Director, Nigel Robbins. “Transportation is a major economic and environmental issue – it’s a top priority for everyone concerned, from road users to businesses and government planners.

“The Databank recognises the importance of being able to provide access to this information to support transport network decisions. By providing a central location where surveys can be identified, this will significantly increase the re-use of travel survey data and reduce disruption to travellers in the capture of the data in support of transport related decisions. To assist in the process of identifying previous surveys, the website is underpinned by GeoSolveIT’s innovative use of mapping technologies.”
